impact of the internet

As the internet being used by 51% of the worlds population, it is a crutial part of promotion. As like everything, their comes pros and cons. The increase of digital downloading as a quick way to access music, has affected the music industry hugely. As the access to new music being as simple as pressing a single button has become more of a norm, the pressure on record labels has increased.  



This diagram shows the increase of internet usage since 1996, as you can see the usage of the web is increasing. As the internet has made music more accessible to the public, it has also helped with the process of distributing music faster and without the need for a major label. As for everything, there are pros and cons of the impact of the internet and the music industry. 
Taking this into consideration, we want our artists music video and music to be the best it can be as this is what people see first hand which controls their decision on whether they want to stream the music. As our artist is independent we want to make sure we

PROS:

  • Independent artists can connect with people globally without the need for a major label to help get them started, for example, Youtube is the most used video website in the world with 1 billion active users a month. major stars like Cody Simpson, Justin Bieber, Susan Boyle, Carley Rae Jepsen. ect. 
  • Allows people to connect globally and promote their own music without a major record label.
CONS:
  • As the internet make the accessibility to new artists easier, this means the business side of the industry is struggling with most of the people who are part of making a record, are paid in royalties and anytime music changes hands without making money  means that these royalties can't be paid. 
  • Artists find it more difficult to make money.
