Location research

The location my group decided on was a local cafe where we are able to film when it is empty which will help us tremendously. Before we start to film, we visited this cafe to check it out in person so we know if it is suitable which we found it is. As the cafe's visual effect, we found that it is perfect for the genre of our music with the raw, authentic feeling it brings which will help draw in our target audience as a cafe is realistic and is accessible in most situations. This cafe which is very local, means that we don't have to locate our equipment a long way. It also gives us a lot of different shots which we can include to add to the sense of mystery. 

This is the bank location which was perfect as it looks very modern and futuristic with its shiny windows and design. As Barde's music is still soulful and natural, the nature helps show this. Also the inside of the bank is busy and hectic, highlighting the busy nature of an office environment.

As the speech we decided to incorporate in our video needed a podium, we were lucky enough to have our school hall which has a stage and platform to present speeches on. Barde will be on the podium with the crowd standing up as we won't have enough people to create an actual crowd, therefore a group of people standing up will create the illusion of there being a big crowd.

These images are test shots to base off of our final digipak idea. We went to different locations and tested with different backgrounds to help us with a final idea. As well as this, we also got Mabel who is going to be our artist 'Barde' to test out different positions in order to pick out our favourite which best represents the type of artist we are going for. We got Mabel to dress in a quite edgy but simplistic way and shot her without makeup which is generally her natural look to give off a raw, indie vibe.  

digipak

Forms and conventions of a digipak 

A digipak is a type of packaging for CD's or DVD's which are typically made from cardboard or plastic. Holding the CD as well as visuals, a digipak can brand the artist and help promote the type of music the artist is portraying. Common conventions include list of songs, images of the artist and a brief description on the album and the album cover itself. The 2000s was the peak time for the selling of CDs as this was a time when artists could sell themselves easily and successfully. As a digipak is a bundle of information compressed into a small folder, it is important to have the curtail information on the front, like the Album title and artists name, whereas extra, less relevant information can be seen inside when explored. A digipak will typically include extra information that a CD wouldn't.

Arctic monkeys 


Titled 'Whatever people say i am' Arctic monkeys released this debut album in 2006. This was the bands way of trying to get across to their audience as who they are as a band which is portrayed through the man on the front cover of the album who is suppose to represent the band and how the band see themselves. This use of the average working class man reflects on the bands mentality of not thinking they are better than anyone else and that they are still able to connect with their audience. The use of the black and white is a key concept that AM use to define themselves and as the waves shown on the front cover is their signature symbol, it automatically shows who they are without having to write their band name on it. The use of the tones of grey reflect on the band and their depressing, dark songs which usually relate to love of life as a situation. Another feature that AM use is the idea of the cigarette being an addiction and their music being an addiction to their fans which connect them. 

Gorillaz:

'Demon days shows the main member on the front cover of their digipak which shows their audience automatically with the tangible CD having silhouettes of the band members against a white background which could be the bands way of telling their audience that the music they have created is more mysterious and adds and new twist on their original music. Parodying the Beatles 'Let it be' album cover, Gorillaz used this idea to recreate their album as they have the same number of bad members. The way this digipak is created, is more interactive as the band have made it so the owner can fold the digipak so their favourite band member can be the front cover by the 'X' design of it. 

As visuals are important to the band, the booklet insert for the standard edition is unique as, instead of presenting the lyrics for the songs, they have visual representations of the lyrics due to the decision made by Albarn and Hewlett wanted the visual narrative to be more dominant. 

Barde

With this diagram, Barde is presented as being a simplistic artist who doesn't want things to be more complex than they need to be. For our digipak, we wanted Barde to have her hair tied up, wearing a denim jacket and jeans to highlight her personality and relaxed style which will attract the right type of audience for her music.
As her style is unique and unmatched, jewelry is a staple piece as it shows her more edgy, free spirit and her lack of makeup shows this with her just wearing a little bit of mascara. Barde's significance as an artist is the emphasise the message in her music and not to make her superior to others. We want her style to show how she is an ordinary person, just with a passion for making music behind a message.

Specific audience profiles

I researched different artists that have similar aspects to the artist our group is working with to get more of an idea about how they attract their target audiences.

Imagine Dragons  
Imagine dragons appeal to their target audience by talking and singing about relavent things that they retarget audience may be experiencing in their lives in which they can relate to. Their popular song 'Radio active' which one band member has said that 'It's a song about having an awakening; kind of waking up one day and deciding to do something new, and see life in a fresh way." which could appeal to a target audience who are beginning a new chapter in their life. e.g teenagers, University graduates (15-35). This relation to problems or situations many people face, mean that 'Imagine Dragons' as a band can keep their target audience closer to them and make them just more than a 'target' which is what we want our artist to portray, as a group. I chose to look at Imagine Dragons as they are similar to the artist we decided to go with. They have a similar vibe to them and use their appearance and assets to attract their target audiences to get the best responses.

 

As well as this, 'Imagine Dragons' are able to connect to a wider male audience as they have similarities to other bands such as Coldplay, fall out boy, Ed Sheeran and twenty one pilots. Imagine Dragons target audience are male and female which mean they have a broad range meaning they can either target one gender or both.

As far as the way they present themselves, as a collective, they wear dark colours which could target audiences who are into punk ect.

Alt- J 
Alt -J come under the genre Indie/alternative which is are the genres are group are focusing on with our artist 'Barde'.

UPDATE

Group discussion 
As a group we came together to discuss the artist for our music video. At first we were going to use someone who was willing to be involved as the artist but we didn't think they would suit the tone and genre of the music to 'The beigeness'. We thought mabel from my group would be more appropriate for the song and video.
 We have a group chat on Facebook which we connect and discuss ideas over.

Lyric analysis

Lyric Analysis of The beigeness
Analysing the lyrics for the song we chose, helps us as a group to identify closely the meaning behind the words and helps us to get a grip of the potential visuals for our video. 

Our group discussed that following the lyrics as being the concept of the video wasn't very original and didn't bring much imagination, therefore one of the ideas were that the artist would be on a podium saying a political speech as the body of the video to add a storyline effect.
